CARBERRY,
1944 TIME

  • 1st July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying
    • 1130 – A Category “D” accident occurred on the Main Aerodrome; 1607614 LAC Whitchelo, R.E. (pupil pilot), with 1685316 LAC Wroe, J. (pupil pilot) overshot on 30° flap landing; the aircraft Ballooned and eventually overran runway and port wheel struck a concrete slab, causing aircraft to swing and nose over. Impossible to determine the serviceability of brakes owing to damage to port wheel, but pressure found to be weak. The
      pilot’s log book was endorsed “Carelessness”.
    • 1450 – The Station Cricket XI played Eaton Trinity in the Winnipeg and District League at Assiniboine Park, WINNIPEG. Result: CARBERRY – 124 for 4 (dec); EATON TRINITY – 47.
    • 2100 – An informal dance was held in the Officers’ Mess.
  • 2nd July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The usual Church Services were held during the day.
    • 1730 – F/O M.A. COWEE (146726) GD, reported on posting from 6 OTU, COMOX, B.C.
    • 1830 – The Station Football XI played No. 26 EFTS, NEEPAWA, at Neepawa in the 2 TC League. Result: CARBERRY – l0; NEEPAWA – Nil.
    • 1830 – The Station Softball Team played No. 26 EFTS, NEEPAWA, at Neepawa in a 2TC League Match, and won, 12 – 8.
  • 3rd July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • F/L W.J. FLEMMING (35454), Camp Commandant, together with four officers and seventy other ranks, from No. 6 (Jim Whitecross) Sqdn., WINNIPEG, No. 170 (St. James) Sqdn, No. 268 (Nipigon) and No. 304 (Alexander) Sqdn,, Air Cadet Corps, arrived on the Unit for their Summer Camp until 12th July, 1944.
    • The football match against No. 1 CNS, RIVERS, in the Brandon & District Services League, to be played at Carberry, was postponed.
    • 1900 – A Recorded Session of popular jazz tunes was held in the Airmen’s Lounge, and the Small Bore Rifle Club met at the Range.
  • 4th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0945 – Air Vice-Marshal K.M. GUTHRIE, CBE, Air Officer Commanding No. 2 Training Command, visited the Unit on an unofficial staff visit, arriving by air accompanied by F/O A. McDONALD (C21699) P.A. During his visit the AOC disposed summarily of charges against two pilot officers, Flying Instructors,

  • July 4th (cont) –
    • and made a thorough investigation into the maintenance and serviceability of aircraft on the Unit.
    • 1500 – The A.O.C. left by air.
    • 1830 & 1930 – Two Inter-Hut Soccer League matches were played off.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League Match was played.
    • 1900 – The Station Softball Team-played No. 12 SFTS, BRANDON, on the Station Pitch and lost, 3-4. This was a Brandon & District Services League Match.
  • 5th July
    • Eleven hours only were fit for flying.
    • 1100 – F/Lt. H. HIRT (C.11896) Medical, reported on posting from No. 7 AOS., PORTAGE-LA-PRAIRIE.
    • 1330 – The Station Soccer and Softball Teams met No. 3 B&GS, MACDONALD, in the 2 TC Leagues. Both matches were played at Carberry. Results: Soccer – Carberry, 8; Macdonald, Nil. Softball – Carberry, Nil; MacDonald, 6.
    • 1845 – A party of airmen were conveyed to the YMCA pool at BRANDON for swimming.
    • 1900 – The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open-air range.
    • 1945 – The Music Club held its weekly meeting in the GIS Block, when a programme of recorded classical music was presented.
    • 2100 – A game of Housey-housey was held in the Recreation Hall.
  • 6th July
    • The maximum number of hours were fit for flying.
    • 1730 – P/O J. STATFORD (164956) GD, arrived on posting from No. 2 FIS, PEARCE, ALTA.
    • 1800 – The Station team played No. 12 SFTS at Softball in the Brandon & District Services League, the match being played at BRANDON. We lost, 18-3.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League match was played off.
  • 7th July
    • Twenty-four hours were fit for flying.
    • 1240 – A Category “D” accident occurred on the Main Aerodrome. No. 1805880 LAC ORCHARD, R.C., pupil pilot, was practising glide approaches and single-engine landings in Anson II FP.826; the starboard undercarriage leg retracted whilst taxying after landing, it is presumed due to the selector lever not being properly locked in the “down” position. The pupil’s log book was endorsed “Carelessness”.
  • 8th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1100 – S/L R.W. LAING (C.1433) S.E.S.O., and F/O R. WILSON (C.40330) C.A.E.O., arrived by air from 2TC. to carry out an inspection of the Equipment Section and matters relating thereto.
    • 1800 – S/L R.L. AMOR AFC and F/L R.J. McBEY, returned to the Unit on completion of Armament Course at No. 2 FIS., PEARCE, Alta.
      Information was received by signal from DAPS that 134 aircrew cadets would be posted to this Unit ex-EFTS on 13th July for useful employment in the trades of DMT, Clk/GD, Eq/Asst, Arm/Asst,, Flying Control Assistant and ACH/GD. Names of airmen of these trades for repatriation to be submitted to DAPS.

Carberry, 1944

  • 9th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The usual Church Services were held during the day.
    • The Softball match versus No. 7 AOS., PORTAGE-LA-PRAIRIE was postponed till a later date, as the Portage pitch was unplayable.
    • 1900 – The Station Football Team played No. 7 AOS in the 2 TC League, the match being played at Carberry instead of Portage. Result: Carberry – 9, Portage – Nil.
  • 10th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1300 – F/O R. WILSON (CAEO) left the Unit by air for No. 10 SFTS, on completion of his inspection.
    • 1830 – The Officers’ Mess played Training Wing in an Inter-Section Cricket League match.
      The football match versus No. 1 CNS., RIVERS, was cancelled.
      Two Inter-Hut football matches were played during the evening.
    • 1900 – A Recorded Session of Popular Jazz Tunes was held in the Airmen’s Lounge.
    • The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
  • 11th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1505 – Air Vice-Marshal K.M. GUTHRIE, CBE, Air Officer Commanding No. 2 TC, arrived on the Unit by air. Following up his inspection on 4th July/44, he visited Maintenance Wing, and left again by air at 1610 hours.
    • 1600 – S/L R.W. LAI NO, SESO, returned by air to No. 2 TC on completion of his inspection.
    • Two Inter-Hut football league matches and an Inter-Section Cricket League match were played off at 1830 and 1930 hours.
  • 12th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1400 – The Station Band attended at the Exhibition Grounds, CARBERRY, on the occasion of Carberry’s Jubilee Exhibition and Summer Fair. The recently acquired public address van was also placed at the disposal of the
      organisers, of the Exhibition, and was extensively used for announcing events and their results. This gesture was greatly appreciated by the citizens of Carberry, and, it is felt, has further enhanced the already friendly relations existing between the Royal Air Force and the people of Carberry.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League match was played off.
    • 1845 – The weekly trip to BRANDON was organised for the purpose of conveying a party of airmen to swim in the YMCA pool.

Carberry, 1944

  • 12th July (cont)
    • 1900 – The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • 1945 – The Music Club met in the GIS Block and enjoyed a programme of recorded classical music.
    • 2100 – Housey-housey” in the Recreation Hall.
      No. 6, No. 170, No. 258 and No. 304 Air Cadet Squadrons departed during the afternoon on completion of their Summer Camp at this Unit.
  • 13th July
    • Wing Commander D. KINNEAR, AFC., AFM., assumed command of No. 33 SFTS, vice G/C J.S.T. FALL, DSC. AFC, on leave.
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1630 – F/O C.W. SIMPSON (153329) GD, proceeded on posting to No. 31 PD., MONCTON, NB (supernumerary).
    • 1945 – The Station Team played No. 1 CNS, RIVERS, in a Brandon & District Services League match. A large crowd, turned out to see a good game which Carberry won, 6 – Nil.
    • The Station Softball team played A.35, CPTC, CAMP SHILO, at Carberry in a Brandon and District Services League Match. Result: lost, 7 – 11.
  • 14th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1630 – F/L E.I.T. JONES (62772), A&SD (Educ) departed on posting to A.F.H.Q., OTTAWA.
  • 15th July
    • The maximum of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1430 – The Station Cricket Team played No. 3 Wireless School “A” Team at Assiniboine Park, WINNIPEG, in the Winnipeg and District League. Result: Carberry, 41. No. 3 W.S., 140 for 5.
  • 16th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • F/L R.T. McDONALD (36800), No. 234 Sqdn., A.C.C., O.C. Air Cadet Corps Summer Camp commencing 17th July/44 arrived to make, preliminary arrangements.
    • 1830 – The Station Team played No. 7 A.O.S., PORTAGE-LA-PRAIRIE, in a 2 TC Softball League match and lost, 15-9.
    • The football match versus No. 7 AOS was cancelled.
  • 17th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1250 – F/L W.A. McCALLUM (C.3652), Command Fire Prevention Officer, arrived by rail to carry out an inspection of Unit fire services.
    • 1255 – F/L K.D. SYMINGTON (C13909), Medical, arrived by rail from No. 2 TC for inspection of T.D. X-ray unit, and left by air for No. 1 CNS, RIVERS, at 1700 hours.
    • 1430 – F/O J.H. ALLEN (142911) GD, (110 Crse) departed on posting to No. 7 B&GS, PAULSON, for useful employment.
    • F/O. A.A. REDBOND (138208) GD, (110 Crse) departed on posting to No. 6 AOS, WINNIPEG, for useful employment.

Carberry, 1944

  • 17th July (cont)
    • 10 other ranks from No. 234 (Minnedosa), 1 officer and 7 OR’s from No. 212 (SOURIS), 1 officer and 5 OR’s from No. 178 (Tiger) (VIRDEN) and 1 officer and 5 OR’s from No. 158 (SIOUX LOOKOUT) Air Cadet Sqdns. arrived during the day to spend their Summer Camp at this Unit.
    • 1830-1930 – An Inter-Section, League Cricket match and two Inter-Hut League Soccer matches were played off.
    • 1900 – The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • 1900 – A recorded session of Popular Jazz Tunes was held in the Airmen’s Lounge.
  • 18th July
    • 22 hours only were fit for flying.
    • 0920 – S/L H.V. Bell (C.6429), No. 2 TC, and S/L W.J. SARGEANT (C.2741), AFHQ, visited the Unit by air in connection with Air Cadet Liaison and departed by air for No. 12 SFTS, BRANDON, at 1115 hours.
    • 1430 – F/L T.S. ATKINSON (103076), Educational, reported on posting from No. 31 PD (Staff) RAF, MONCTON, NB, relief for F/L E.I.T. JONES, posted to AFHQ.
    • 1430 – F/L D. TEMPLETON (47398) GD, (110 Crse), departed on posting to No. 1 CNS, RIVERS, for useful employment.
    • 1630 – A Category “D” forced landing occurred on the Main Aerodrome – F/O L.A. BARLOW (instructor) with LAC HIBBERD (pupil pilot) successfully forced-landed at parent unit owing to failure of starboard engine after approximately 20 minutes’ flying. No injuries were sustained.
    • 1600 – F/O G.A.C. CARRINGTON (156449) GD, (110 Crse), departed on posting to 7 AOS, PORTAGE-LA-PRAIRIE, or useful employment.
    • 1630 – F/L W.A. McCALLUM, Command Fire Prevention Officer, returned to 2 TC on completion of his tour of inspection.
    • The Station Softball Team played A3, CATC, CAMP SHILO, in a Brandon & District Services League Match. Result: Shilo 3, Carberry Nil.
    • 1730 – Air Vice-Marshal L.D.D. McKEAN, CB, OBE, Air Officer in charge of RAF Liaison in Canada, visited the Unit and addressed all u/t pilots in the Recreation Hall at 1800 hours. After dinner, A.V-M. McKEAN gave
      an interesting talk to all officers in the Mess, and dealt with several questions asked by officers regarding their future employment and the possibility of getting on operations on return to the U.K.
    • A.V-M. McKEAN left by air for 2 TC at 2000 hrs.
    • 1830 & 1930 – Two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played off, and one Inter Section Cricket League match.
    • 2000-0100 – A Corporals’ Dance was held in the Corporals’ Club, hostesses being provided from BRANDON and Shilo.

1944 Carberry

  • 18th July (Cont)
    • 2330 – W/C G.S.G. HENSON (C.4454) A.E. reported on temporary duty from No. 17 SFTS., RCAF., SOURIS, to assist in maintenance problems.
  • 19th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1030 – W/C S.R.C. NELSON (23273), RAF Medical Liaison Officer, AFHQ, visited the Unit, arriving by air from No. 12 SFTS., BRANDON. W/C NELSON departed by rail for 2 TCHQ at 1600 hours.
    • 1400 – A meeting of the P.S.I. Committee was held in the S. Ad.O’s Office.
    • 1530 – A meeting of the Station Fire Committee was held in the S.Ad.O’s office.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League Match was played off.
    • The Brandon & District Services League Football match versus A.3, CATC, CAMP SHILO, was cancelled.
  • 20th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1900 – The Station Softball Team played H.Q., CAMP SHILO, in a Brandon & District Services League match, and lost 11 – Nil.
    • 1930 – The Station Football Team played No. 1 CNS, RIVERS, at Rivers in a Brandon & District Services League Match. Result – Draw, 1 goal each.
  • 21st July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • A Category “D” accident occurred 2½ miles south and one mile west of PRATT, Manitoba. Anson II 8476, piloted by 1267848 Sgt. BUSH, J., (instructor) with 1587489 LAC WAYLEN, J.R. (pupil pilot), made a successful forced landing after starboard engine failed to pick up whilst demonstrating emergency landing with wheels and flaps down. Finding engine serviceable, the pilot decided to attempt a take-off and in so doing damaged the tips of the port propellor. After change of propellor, the aircraft was subsequently flown off by another pilot. This accident is the subject of an investigation.
  • 22nd July
    • Group Captain J.S.T. FALL, DSC., AFC, resumed command of 33 SFTS, RAF, CARBERRY, Man, vice Wing Commander D. KINNEAR, AFC, AFM, on recall from leave.
    • 16 hours only were fit for flying owing to heavy rain during the evening.
    • 0930 – S/L T.E. KIRK (C.4050) Med. & S/L S.A. THOMSON (C.26887) Med., visited the Unit by air from No. 2 TC, returning by air at 1130 hours.
    • 1100 – G/C. H.H. ATKINSON, S.A.O., 2 TC, visited the Unit by air and departed by air for 2 TC at 1300 hours.
    • 2000 The Station Football XI played the “Winnipeg All-Stars XI” in an exhibition match at Osborne Stadium, WINNIPEG. Result: Carberry 7, All-Stars 2.
  • 23rd July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The usual Church Services were held during the day.

  • 24th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1100 – F/L W.B. OLIVER (67040) GD, (110 Crse) departed on posting to No. 7 B&GS, PAULSON, Man., for useful employment.
    • 1200 – F/O W. WATLING (65430) GD (110 Crse) departed on posting to No. 1 CNS, RIVERS, for useful employment.
    • 1600 – W/C W.A. COSTELLO (C.1931) Command R.C. Chaplain, visited the Unit, and departed by air at 1600 hours for No. 12 SFTS, BRANDON.
    • 1630 – F/L W. KIRKWOOD-HACKETT (108036) GD (110 Crse) departed on posting to No. 3 B&GS, MACDONALD, Man., for useful employment.
    • 1630 – F/L G.K. MUIRHEAD (45951) GD (110 Crse) departed on posting to No. 5 AOS, WINNIPEG, Man. for useful employment.
    • F/L W.F. INGLIS (102968) GD (110 Crse) departed on posting to No. 7 AOS, PORTAGE-LA-PRAIRIE, Man., for useful employment.
    • P/O R.J. MACKIE (154796) GD (Nav) departed on posting to No. 31 B&GS., PICTON, ONT.
    • F/O. G. WILDING (152289) GD (Nav) departed on posting to No. 31 ANS., PORT ALBERT.
    • 1830-1930 – An Inter-Section Cricket League and two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played off.
    • 1900 – The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the Open-Air Range.
    • 2000 – Dr. A.J. BRACE, YMCA Speaker who has served for 26 years in China gave a lecture on the Far Eastern situation. Dr. Brace earlier gave a short talk in the Officers’ Mess.
    • 2000 – F/L V.G. Scholefield (83586) Equip., arrived on posting from No. 32 SFTS., MOOSE JAW, Sask., relief for S/L. B.F. DOLMAN.
  • 25th July
    • Wing Commander D. KINNEAR, AFC, AFM, assumed command of No. 33 S.F.T.S., R.A.F., CARBERRY, Man., vice Group Captain J.S.T. FALL, DSC, AFC (on leave).
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • Nos. 234 (MINNEDOSA), 212 (SOURIS), 178 (Tiger – VIRDEN) and 158 (SIOUX LOOKOUT) Air Cadet Sqdns. departed on termination of their Summer Camp at this Unit. This ended the Air Cadet Summer’ Camps at Carberry for this year.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Hut Football League and an Inter-Section Cricket League Match were played off.
    • 1900 – The Station Softball Team played A3, CATC, CAMP SHILO, in a Brandon & District Services League Match. Result: Carberry 7, Shilo 6.
    • An Inter-Hut Football League match was played off at PETREL.

1944 Carberry

  • 25th July (cont)
    • 1930 – The Corporals’ Club played the Sergeants’ Mess in a grand challenge football match. Result: Corporals 6; Sergeants 3.
  • 26th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1300 – F/O A.K. IBBETT (152114) GD & F/O J.M. BRUCE (152639) GD, departed on posting to No. 31 ANS, PORT ALBERT.
    • 1400 – A Category “D” accident occurred on the Main Aerodrome due to The port brake of Anson II JS117 failing whilst being taxied by 1064873 LAC WINSTONE, L., pupil pilot, causing it to collide with Anson II 8644.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League match was played off.
    • 1845 – A party of airmen were conveyed to the YMCA Swimming Pool in BRANDON.
    • 1945 – The Music Club held its weekly programme of recorded classical music in the GIS Block.
    • 2000 – The Station XI played A.15, CITC, CAMP SHILO, in the Brandon & District Services League match on the Station pitch. Result: Carberry, 1. Shilo, Nil.
    • 2030-0033 – An Airmen’s Dance was held at R.l, PETREL.
  • 27th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1010 – G/C A.J. TAUNTON and S/L E.J. VERRIER (C.2333), Command Works & Buildings Officers; visited the Unit on temporary duty; also Lt. Col. BAILEY, Command Dental Officer. The party departed by air for No. 3 B&GS, MACDONALD, Man., at 1515 hours.
    • 1130 – F/O W.H. CARTER (NZ41533) GD (110 Crse), departed on posting to No. 1 CNS, RIVERS, Man., for useful employment.
    • 1200 – F/L E.W. NEWMAN (128462) GD departed on posting to 6 OTU, BOUNDARY BAY, B.C.
    • 1230 – Air Vice-Marshal K.M. GUTHRIE, CBE, Air Officer Commanding No. 2 Training Command, RCAF., visited the Unit accompanied by G/C J.S. SCOTT (CTO), G/C H.H. ATKINSON (SAO) and F/O A. McDONALD (C.21699)(PA). During his visit, the A.O.C. disposed summarily of charges against two officer flying instructors for breaches of flying discipline. The AOC and party left by air for No. 3 B&GS, MACDONALD, Man., at 1430 hours.
    • 1410 – A Category “D” accident occurred on the Main Aerodrome owing to the pilot of Anson II 8448 (F/O R.F. LAWFORD, Instructor) being unable to lock the undercarriage down. After attempting to pump the undercarriage down for 50 minutes, the pilot made a successful wheels-up landing. No injuries were suffered. (Pupil: 1568428 LAC Plenderleith, D.M.).
    • 1830-1930 – A Station Trial Cricket match and two Inter-Hut Football League matches were played.
  • 28th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1400 – F/O H.F. HALL (C.14585), Command Special Services Officer, visited the Unit on temporary duty and departed at 1730 hours.
    • 1730 – S/L B.F. DOLMAN (80726) departed on posting to No. 31 P.D., MONCTON, NB, for repatriation.

Carberry 1944

  • 29th July
    • 1430 – The Station Cricket XI played St. George’s C.C. at Assiniboine Park, WINNIPEG, in a Winnipeg & District League Match. Result: Carberry 79 all out; St. George’s 16 all out. St. George’s XI are top of the Winnipeg League.
  • 30th July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The usual Church Services were held during the day.
  • 31st July
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1830 – An Inter-Section Cricket League Match was played.
    • 1900 – A recorded session of popular jazz tunes was held in the Airmen’s Lounge.
    • The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • 2000 – The Music Club at R.I., PETREL, held a concert of recorded classical music.
