Carberry 1944

  • September 1st
    • Maximum number of hours were available for flying.
    • An aircraft. No.8453, Pilot LAC Little, A (GB. 1617052) ground looped on landing due to a burst tyre. No one was injured.
  • September 2nd
    • Number of hours fit for flying (12).
    • 1430 – Cricket – No. 2 T.C. Championship, Winnipeg.
    • 1730 – Mass – Station Chapel.
    • 2000 – Lighting snooker tournament was held in Airmen’s Recreation Room.
  • September 3rd
    • “Five Years at War today”.
    • Maximum number of hours fit for flying.
    • The usual Church Services were held in the morning and evening.
  • September 4th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • 1830 – A Cricket match was played in the Inter Section League.
    • 1830 – A Football match was played in the Inter Hut League.
    • 1900 – The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open Air Range.
    • 1900 – Records of popular Jazz tunes were played in the Airmen’s Lounge.
    • The Music Club played records of popular classical music at Petrel.
  • September 5th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • 0945 F/Lt. Griffith, V.O. arrived by Air from No. 2 Training Command on a Staff visit and left the same day at 1700 hours.
    • The following officers arrived by Rail from “A.F.H.Q. Auditors”. F/Lt. Graham (Accts), F/O. Kay (Accts), F/O. Hatfield.
    • P/O. Thompson and P/O. McLaren arrived from No. 1 A.G.T.S.
    • 1830 – A Cricket match was played in the Inter Section League.
    • 1830 – A football match was played in the Inter Hut League.
    • The Semi-final of the tug-o-war was held tonight.
    • Holy Communion was held in the Station Chapel.

Carberry 1944

  • September 6th
    • Today we had the Station Sports Day and it proved a terrific success. The programme included every kind of sport which was keenly contested. The ‘Obstacle Race’ provided many laughs for the Spectators who crowded around the water jump waiting for some unfortunate to plunge into the cold muddy water – they were not disappointed. The ‘Sack Race’ caused hilarious laughter as the competitors strived vainly to keep balance with maximum speed.
      Squadron Leader Howard, A.F.C., gave a very thrilling exhibition of flying and aerobatics in a ‘Harvard’.
      Later in the evening a grand Concert was given by the Ukranian Youth Club.
      This completely successful day was rounded off by a dance in the Airmen’s Recreation Hall, and the presentation of the prizes by Mrs. J.S.T. Fall, wife of the Commanding Officer.

  • September 7th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • 0700 Holy Communion was held in the Station Chapel.
    • 1900 A Rugby trial match was played.
  • September 8th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • The Semi-final of No. 2 T.C. Championship Football was played at Osborne Stadium, Winnipeg – 33 SFTS Versus Saskatoon. Result 4-1 for this Unit.
  • September 9th
    • Football championship was held tonight at the Osborne Stadium (Final). At 1930 hours the match started and after a beautiful clean game the results were: 33 SFTS 5 goals. No. 5 A.O.S. 1 goal.

    • A Cricket match was played at the Assinboine Park; Winnipeg between 33 SFTS and No. 3 W.S. The results were: 3 W.S. (“B” Team) 74 – 33 SFTS. 79 for 4 wickets

    • 2000 – In Camp at the Airman’s Lounge a Lightning Snooker Tournament was held.
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
  • September 10th
    • Twenty-two hours were fit for flying
    • S/L.- Hall, V.A. (Accts) arrived from A.F.H.Q. by Rail.

Carberry 1944

  • September 10th
    • Holy Communion was held in the Station Chapel.
    • 0900 – Roman Catholic Mass.
    • 1000 – Short Service held in No. 2 Hangar.
    • 1200 – Short Service. R. l Petrel.
  • September 11th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • The Small Bore Rifle Club were on the Open Air Range at 1900 hours.
    • A Rugby trial match was held at 1900 hours.
    • Popular Jazz music records were played in the Airmen’s Lounge at 1900 hours.
    • The Music Club played Classical Records at Petrel at 2000 hours.
    • An Inter Hut competition football match was played.
    • S/Ldr. Reuss, J.C.E. Chaplain, arrived from 36 S.F.T.S. by 1715 hours.
    • Nineteen hours only were fit for flying.
  • September 12th
    • F/L. David, S.S. (132596), F/Lt. Williams, G.M. (29079) and F/Lt. C.D. Pollard (46803) arrived by Air from 32 S.F.T.S. for District Court Martial.
    • 1815 – Football – Inter Hut Competition (First round).
    • 1815 – Football – Inter Hut Competition (second round).
  • September 13th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • An Anson FP.988 u/t Pilot, No. 1685780 LAC. Naylor, W.B., crashed whilst on Solo Cross Country at 1700 hours. The cause is unknown – Investigation pending. LAC. Naylor was killed. Crash occurred at Kellys Farm, Crawford Park, Manitoba.
    • Football – Inter Hut Competition.
    • 1845 – Rugby Vs. No. 3 B. & G Macdonald. No. 2 T.C. Brandon Area Championship, Result 6 – 6.
    • 1945 – Music Club. A grand selection of Classical Music was played on records in the G.I.S. Block.
    • 2100 – The City Hydro Victory troupe gave a very good concert in the Recreation Hall. It was attended by the Commanding Officer and his wife.
  • September 14th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • (A.I.B) F/Lt Martin (C14589) arrived from No. 2 T.C. by Air at 1405 hours.
    • (A.I.B) S/Ldr Dawson arrived from No. 2 T.C. at 2100 hours, these Officers are Investigating the

    • crash of Anson PP.988 which crashed September 13th at Crawford Park,
    • Holy Communion was held in the Station Chapel.
    • A Snooker Match was held in the Airmen’s Recreation Room between Corporals and Airmen.
    • Two Inter Hut Cup Competition football matches were played tonight.
  • September 15th
    • Only two hours were fit for flying.
    • S/Ldr. Bailes A. (104721) arrived from No. 2 T.C. at 1800 hours by Rail on Staff Duty.
  • September 16th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying
    • 0700 – Holy Communion was held in the Station Chapel.
    • S/Ldr Bailes, A. (104721) returned to No. 2 T.C. at 1690 hours by rail.
    • 2000 – A lightning Snooker Tournament was held in the Airmen’s Recreation Hall. A Formal evening and farewell dance was held at the Officer’s Mess and attended by the following distinguished guests. A.V.M. K.M. Guthrie, CBE., A/C. A.J. Ashton, G/Capt. J.S. Scott, MC. AFC., from No. 2 Training Command and Colonel Ash, Colonel Mitchell, Major Taylor from Camp Shilo.
    • A Cocktail party in the Mess garden was held for Officers and their wives and Official guests, at the beginning of the evening. The Dance followed when the rest of the ladies arrived from Brandon and Winnipeg.
  • September 17th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • An aircraft, Anson PP.755 returned from a Solo cross country and the mainplane found damaged. u/t Pilot, AUS. 21058 LAC. Smith. No one was injured.
    • The usual Church Services were held during the day.
  • September 18th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • Aircraft No. 8476 flown by F/Lt. Drake, D.J. struck a tree whilst on low level Cross country exercise. No one was injured and aircraft returned to the Unit.
    • 1800 – Inter Hut Cup competition.
    • 1900 – A recorded session of popular Jazz tunes was played in the Airmen’s lounge.
    • 1900 – Small Bore Rifle Club – open air range.
    • Rugby – Brandon Area Championship. 33 SFTS V. 3 B & G Macdonald – Result Macdonald 16, 33 SFTS 01.
  • September 19th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • A keen sense of rivalry has arisen between the gardening enthusiasts of this Station. The results have brought forth a display of neat ‘Lawns’ and beautiful flowers, most becoming to this Flying School.

    • Holy Communion was held in the Station Chapel at 2115 hours.
    • Two Football matches were played in the Inter Hut Competition.

Carberry 1944

  • September 20th
    • The maximum hours were fit for flying.
    • 1800 – A football match was played in the Inter Hut competition.
    • 1900 – Small Bore Rifle club met at the Open Air Range.
    • 1945 – The Music Club members played records of Classical music in the G.I.S.
      Block.
    • 2100 – A concert party, the ‘Kurvettes’ gave a very good show in the Recreation
      Hall.
  • September 21st
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1430 – L/Col. Cerly, Command Dental Officer, visited the Unit on temporary duty
      and left by air for 2 T.C. at 1630 hours.
    • 1800 – Two Inter Hut Football matches were played.
    • 1900 – A Snooker match between the Officers and airmen was played in the
      Airmen’s Recreation Hall.
  • September 22nd
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The following Officers departed from the Unit during the day on posting
      to the Units indicated:
      • P/O J. Dowsett (GD) (164154) to 17 S.F.T.S. Souris, Man.
      • F/O.G.K. Samson (GD) (153507) to 4 S.F.T.S.
      • F/O.W.S. Jack (GD) (165757) to 4 S.F.T.S.
      • P/O P.G. Miall (GD) (163979) to 12 S.F.T.S. Brandon, Man.
      • F/O E.K. Taylor (GD) (163659) to 18 S .F .T .S .
      • F/O C.D. Edwards (Teoh (s))(131511) to 6 S.F.T.S.
    • No.102 Course graduated at this Unit and were presented with their “Wings” by G/C. J.S.T.,Fall, DSC. AFC., Commanding Officer. Out of a course intake of 68, 53 pupils successfully graduated, fifteen being appointed to Commissioned rank. A “Wings Dinner” was held in the Airmen’s Mess at 2000 hours for the course graduates.
  • September 23rd
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 2000 – A lightning Snooker Tournament was held in the Airmen’s Recreation Room.
      2030 – An Exhibition football match versus No 17 S.F.T.S, RCAF. Souris, Man., was played at Osborne Stadium, Winnipeg. No 33 SFTS won 6-1.

Carberry 1944 

  • September 24th
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • The Usual Church Services were held during the day.
    • 1400 – S/L. J.M. Brown (75113) (Accts) arrived on posting from No 14 S.F.T.S. Kingston, Ontario, relief for S/L J.E. Towlson, warned for repatriation.
    • 1500 – W/C I.T. Webster (C1264)(GD) and six officers, No. 2 C.V.F., Central Flying School arrived by air for the purpose of examining instructors and pupils.
  • September 25
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1000 – A District Court Martial assembled on the Station for the purpose of trying No. 1267848 Sgt. Bush, J., Flying Instructor, on three charges arising from a Flying offence on 21st July, 1944.
    • 1800 – The two Semi-final matches in the Inter Hut Soccer competition were played off with the following results:
      • Hut 31 Nil .. Hut 14 5.
      • Sergeants Mess Nil .. 104 Course 4.
    • 1900 – A recorded session of popular jazz tunes was held in the Airman’s Lounge and the Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
  • September 26th
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 1800 – An Inter Hut Football League match was played.
  • September 27th
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0900 – F/O J.E. Irvine (52026)(F/eng. u/t Pilot) and F/O. J.A. Sprigge (F/Eng u/t Pilot)(52287) departed on posting to No. 10 S.F.T.S. Dauphin ex-useful employment.
    • 1530 – Flt/O. E.M. Raynor (V30187), Command Messing Officer, arrived on the Unit to carry out an inspection of messing.
    • 1800 – The final match of the Inter Hut Football league was played on Wembley. The winners of the league are Hut 15, with 104 Course as runners-up.
    • 1900 – The Small Bore Rifle Club met at the open air range.
    • 1945 – The Music Club met in the G.I.S. Block and a programme of classical music was enjoyed by a large attendance.
    • 2100 – The Beaver Club Concert Party from Winnipeg gave a concert in the Recreation Hall. A fine show was very well received by a full house.
  • September 28th
    • The maximum number of hours was fit for flying.
    • 0800 – Flt/O. E.M. Raynor returned to 2 T.C. an completion of her inspection of Messing.
    • 1800 – The final of the Inter Hut Competition was played at Wembley before a large crowd. No. 104 Course (the runners-up in the Inter Hut League) won the competition by defeating Hut 14 by 3 goals to 1. At the conclusion of the match Mrs. J.S.T. Fall, wife of the Commanding Officer, presented the Inter Hut Football Competition Cup to the captains of the winning teams and also souvenir prizes to the players.

Carberry 1944

  • September 29th
    • Eighteen hours only were fit for flying.
    • 0600 S/L E.I.T. Jones (62772), R.A.F. Education Officer, A.F.H.Q., arrived
      from Moose Jaw on temporary duty.
  • September 30th
    • Two hours were fit for flying (Beam only) owing to low cloud base, rain showers and the first snow of the season.
    • 1630 S/L. E.I.J. Jones departed for 2 T.C. on completion of his inspection of the
      Education Section.
    • F/O. F.G. Collier (148061) and F/O. A. Brown (148060) A & S.D.(L.T.I)
      departed on posting to 31 P.D. Moncton for repatriation.
    • 2030 A Dance was held in the Sergeants’ Mess.
